Krug Chalet

In the name of the House of Krug & The Dolder Grand Hotel Zurich, I was invited to the most amazing fondue above the rooftops of Zurich and personally speaking one of the best ones I have ever had!

The Krug Chalet brings together traditional Swiss cuisine and a stunning panoramic view of Zurich at the very highest level.

With Heiko Nieder in front of the Krug Chalet

DAS Fondue is a joint creation by Heiko Nieder, Chef Fine Dining at The Restaurant and «Chef of the Year 2019», and Maître Fromager Rolf Beeler and consists of Gruyère, Vacherin from Fribourg, Raclette from the Valais and Mimolette, combined with paprika and jalapeños. A truly interesting and new taste for a fondue – I loved it!

With Heiko Nieder at the helm, the Dolder Grand’s fine-dining restaurant was awarded 2 Michelin stars and 19 GaultMillau points. Rolf Beeler, who truly can claim to be one of the leading cheese experts, has been turning the Swiss world of cheese on its head for a number of years. Exquisite cheese meets haute cuisine. The dishes designed to perfectly complement the Krug champagnes are true classics that offer an explosion of flavours.

Guests will be served chorizo, Iberian ham aged for 36 months, and a Spanish dried black pudding. These specialities will be accompanied by DAS Fondue, that can be enjoyed in the traditional way with bread baked in a wood-fired oven and potatoes, or with anchovies and olives for a touch of Iberian flair.

Happy faces at the Krug Chalet.

But why is the paprika so important? Pioneers of taste: As part of the Single Ingredient programme, Krug works with culinary ambassadors across the world to select a single special ingredient that celebrates the individuality of each of their vineyards. After all, the vineyard plays a crucial role in defining the flavour of every champagne.

This year, paprika was the ingredient selected. Krug Cellar Master Eric Lebel introduced the chefs to the fascinating world of paprika during a trip to Oaxaca in Mexico. Krug and the Dolder Grand now present the results together with Krug Ambassador Heiko Nieder.

DAS Fondue The dinner comprises a trio of Spanish meat specialities, a signature fondue, half a bottle of Krug Grande Cuvée, 167ème Édition, per person, mineral water and coffee or tea.

CHF 450.00 for two people
CHF 792.00 for four people
CHF 1188.00 for six people

The Krug Chalet offers reservations for a minimum of two people and can seat a total of up to six people (then you have the chalet exclusively). And for those who would like to try Rolf Beeler’s and Heiko Nieder’s creation at home, DAS Fondue is set to be available at the Dolder Grand’s Saltz restaurant and from Rolf Beeler from the end of November for CHF 28.00 (for two people).

The Chalet Krug is open now to January 31, 2020 (with the option of an extension).

October is breast cancer awareness month and each year the Estée Lauder Companies launch some of their iconic products as a part of the Pink Ribbon collection, of which proceeds of the profits are donated to research. A movement that started with one woman, Evelyn H. Lauder. In 1992, the Breast Cancer Awareness Campaign was born when the visionary became troubled by the lack of awareness, funding and resources necessary to overcome the disease.

Even that this post is pretty late in the last days of October (I hadn’t received the infos in time…), I don’t want you to miss this beautiful initiative by the Estée Lauder Companies as raising awareness for breast cancer is very dear to my heart. My mum had it twice and survived it. Being close to someone that goes through this terrible disease, is eye-opening.

Baur au Lac Summer Party

It’s been 175 years since Johannes Baur opened the iconic Baur au Lac as the first hotel built directly on Lake Zurich. As one of Europe’s few grand hotels it is owned by the same family since its inception. The Baur au Lac is definitely the place to be when it comes to high end celebrations. Just one weekend ago, I was honored to be invited to the hotel owner’s daughter’s wedding that was one of the most beautiful and romantic events I have ever attended.

Countless stories could be told – if it were not for the hotel’s discretion which also became part of its reputation. But the hotel was making its own history: In 1853 in its Petit Palais, the «Peace of Zurich» was made. And in 1892 Baroness Bertha von Suttner convinced, here in the Baur au Lac, the Swedish industrialist Alfred Nobel of the necessity for an international peace prize.
Marc Chagall sketched his glass paintings for Zurich’s Fraumünster Church while staying as a guest of the hotel. And it was here that Franz Liszt accompanied his son-in-law, Richard Wagner, on the piano for the world premiere of Die Walküre. The Baur au Lac has welcomed the likes of Kaiser Wilhelm II, General Ulysses Grant, Margaret Thatcher, Indira Gandhi, Henry Kissinger, Queen Elizabeth II and many more.

To celebrate its big birthday year, the Baur au Lac has been rolling out the red carpet with some enticing events. One of them was the famous truly scintillating summer party that took place last Saturday in the incredible ambience of the hotel’s garden with stellar performances and all you can drink champagne! The first and finest social event that marks the end of the summer break brings together everyone who loves to live it up! Epic performances and a culinary explosion of flavours: from hot to cold and sweet to spicy, the buffets were filled with all sorts of culinary delights. I had a lot of fun that night …

Visiting the Zürcher Theater Spektakel

Yesterday evening, I went with friends for the first time spontaneously to the Zürcher Theater Spektakel. It was a fun and welcome alternative to an usual Saturday evening in Zurich, different, alternative and mind-opening. Founded in 1980 as an annual meeting of independent theatre groups, it quickly evolved into a cultural event of international appeal. Today it ranks among the most important European festivals for the contemporary performing arts, a popular venue for both renowned and upcoming theatre and dance companies from all over the world.

Walking to the festival already feels like being on vacation again.

The festival is spread over 18 days at the «Landiwiese». It feels like being somewhere else in the world. This superb, park-like site, located directly on the shores of Lake Zurich, hosts various different sized activities during the festival. Onsite restaurants and bars, performances under the open sky and versatile ad hoc events offer all sorts of entertainment to enjoy the open-air season.

Here are some of my photos that I took last night. Enjoy!

«Nieder mit den Alpen» (down with the Alps)…

… «freie Sicht aufs Mittelmeer» (unobstructed view of the Mediterranean), an initiative of the Social Muscle Club

… that celebrated «ein Tisch für alle» (a table for everyone) last night.

All sorts of live acts attract the open-minded spectators.

People of all ages enjoy the atmosphere outside… watching the people themselves is already a spectacle.

You can even get open-air massages…

… relax on the beautiful shores of Lake Zurich…

… or buy some arts and crafts.

For the festival’s schedule, click here please. It goes on until September 1, 2019.

My Look: Street Parade 2019

On Saturday we celebrated Street Parade in Zurich, the most attended technoparade in Europe. I prefer leaving the streets to the ravers as I find it too crowded but I still enjoy the music very much. Therefore personally speaking the place to be is the Boum-Boum au Lac party in the exclusive garden of the Hotel Baur au Lac where I also stayed that day in a beautiful corner suite. As it rained the whole morning, it was tough to decide on the outfit. Finally the  sun came out and I went for this bohemian style.

My look: Veneto cropped off-the-shoulder crinkled ramie and cotton-blend gauze topicon, Veneto shirred crinkled ramie and cotton-blend gauze maxi skirticon and raffia belt bagicon, all by Zimmermann, suede and wooden clogsicon by Miu Miu, beaded bracelet by Saint Laurent, gold-tone necklace with shell charmsicon, and gold-tone and shell chokericon, both by Isabel Marant, bohemian headpiece by Chanel.

Celebrating National Day as a Swiss

Today, is August 1st, Swiss National Day, the date on which three Alpine cantons swore the oath of confederation in 1291, an act which later came to be regarded as the foundation of Switzerland. It is celebrated everywhere in the country, as it always has been, with meetings in town squares, fetes, fireworks and bonfires.

I have been living in Switzerland now for over fourteen years and since March, I am also a proud double citizen, being German and now also Swiss.

I love the mountains, the lake of Zurich, the people, the food and of course the Swiss watches which are famous around the world. Therefore I thought that I dedicate today to some of the most iconic watchmakers.

Baby Boomer Nails

Since last year, baby boomer nails, also known as French Fade, have been all the rage in France and Germany. And if you just asked yourself, «what the heck are baby boomer nails and why is a nail trend coming from Europe?» Here is your answer: Baby boomer nails are the perfect blend of minimal nail art and the classic French manicure providing an ombré look that is less bold and more sophisticated.

Step 1: The white colour is applied with a sponge-like tool to the tip.

The name derives from the Baby Boom generation that is most often defined as those individuals born between 1946 and 1964 who grew up at a time of dramatic social change, widely associated with privilege. The term itself refers to a noticeable increase in the birth rate after World War II. In this time of the baby boom, the most popular nail colours were besides red, frosted pinks and whites. So for reasons that seem obvious this is why the ombré trend was named because of the era the polish colours were most popular.

Step 2: A thin layer of pink gel is applied and afterwards filed into the perfect shape.

If you want to get on board with the baby boomer look but don’t know how you’ll explain it to your manicurist, here is how my beloved nail artist Megan Stadler does it. These are her pro tips to take to your next appointment in case you are not living in Zurich, otherwise call her for under +41 79 425 8868. I have gel nails (love how long-lasting they are) but you can of course also achieve the look with regular nail polish.

Step 3: A pink gloss for the ultimate shine.

It’s a timeless and elegant look, soft pink fading into frosted white tips. The shape of the nail is up to you. There’s something romantic about it, perfect for a wedding. I am totally in love and you?

Talbot Runhof in Zurich

Munich-based designers Johnny Talbot and Adrian Runhof left careers in engineering and fashion consulting to launch their own label, which is defined by luxurious fabrics and elegant silhouettes.

After Munich, Dusseldorf and Berlin, TALBOT RUNHOF finally opened their first exclusive salon in Switzerland in partnership with Maison Gassmann, a local fashion institution since 1882, that has carried the brand since many years. To celebrate the occasion, an opening party took place that was a lot of fun!

With Johnny Talbot (left) and Adrian Runhof (right) at the opening party.

The interior design of the new store by Patrick Ferrier makes customer feel like they are at home.  It blends in perfectly with the beautiful location – the medieval «House to the Golden Sheep» in the old town of Zurich. Warm purple and gold tones create an elegant atmosphere alongside the original wooden floors and cool retro chandeliers. On the ground floor, you can find the whole collection, including beautiful evening wear with flattering gathered details and rich colors, while the basement serves as a generous VIP area for the ultimate and discreet shopping experience.

«We are part-time Swiss,» says Adrian Runhof, «so it was on top of our bucket list to finally open a boutique in Zurich. With Katja and Michael Hahnloser we have ideal partners and longtime friends to realize this dream.»

Adrian, you have been living in Switzerland now for almost a decade? Why did you move here and how do you like it?

I live predominately in Munich but happily spend a considerable amount of time in Switzerland. For approximately the last 10 years, we have a wonderful apartment overlooking Lake Zurich where we often go hiking and swimming, preferably with our border terrier, Cooper. Without a doubt, Switzerland has an unbeatable quality of life… quality of air… quality of nature… quality of EVERYTHING…

Zurich marks the opening of your 4th store and the first one in Switzerland. You opened it in partnership with Maison Gassmann that have been carrying your designs since many years. Can you tell me a little bit about the story behind?

Katja and Michael Hahnloser from Maison Gassmann have been been carrying TALBOT RUNHOF in the their boutique for many years now. What started as a business relationship has developed into a very close friendship. They are young, cool, creative and enthusiastic; always up for a challenge.

How would you describe the Swiss fashion/clothing style compared to other PoS for example? Is the buying different from your other stores?

Our swiss customers are definitely risk takers… always looking for that special piece. That statement piece. That piece that requires a keen eye for fashion.

Choosing my outfit for the opening night with Johnny & Adrian.

TALBOT RUNHOF is known for creating amazing bespoke gowns. Can the Swiss ladies meet you in person from time to time?  Do you offer the same service as in Munich for example?

Now that we have a boutique in Zurich, the frequency with which I have a bowl of pasta at BINDELLA, go swimming at the HÜTTENSEE or simply hang out in our boutique in SCHIPFE 4 has increased dramatically. For me it is that perfect balance of work and pleasure.

Our wonderful team in our boutique in Zurich offers exactly the same service as in our other three boutiques in Germany… what a lot of people do not know is that TALBOT RUNHOF is a 100% MADE IN GERMANY product. So if a dress is not available in your size or color, more often that not, we can make it within a reasonable amount of time.

In love with my TALBOT RUNHOF jumpsuit in silver.

How can I imagine the creative process between you two?

Over the last almost 30 years, Johnny and I have developed a very special way of working together. We never went to fashion school. We never learned how to be fashion designers. It’s a very unconventional yet intuitive ping pong game we play, batting around an idea until we feel it is right for the TALBOT RUNHOF customer.

Who would you love to see in your dresses?

For us, our customers are the real celebrities.

Thank you, Adrian, for your time and insider on the Zurich store opening.

I have been a big fan of TALBOT RUNHOF since the beginning. Originally, the company, founded in 1992, was called «All About Eve». In 2000, it was renamed in TALBOT RUNHOF, to match the faces behind and due to trademark issues, as Wolfgang Joop had already launched a perfume of the same name on the market.

The designer duo catered to the huge demand for modern evening dresses in the ’90s and built up a core of loyal customers over the years. Their small store and atelier in Munich was located close to ESMOD, where I studied fashion design at that time and I always admired their work as a young student. So you can imagine, that it is a real honor that our paths have crossed over the years again and again… businesswise and privately.
