Lively, Chic and Undeniably Etro

Cardigans are experiencing a resurgence as a key element in the contemporary wardrobe. I personally love Etro’s covetable statement pieces. Lengthy silhouettes suit the moment’s layering obsession when worn like a longline jacket, while the vibrant jacquard prints highlights the brand’s bohemian aesthetic. One thing is for sure, those knitwear pieces will transform even the most minimalist of outfits into a celebration of maximalism, and greats news is most of them are all on sale. Lively, chic and undeniably Etro.

The Look That Went Viral

The fashion world can be unpredictable – no one ever really knows if something will go viral or not. It has to be the right moment, the right look, and probably the right photo. Katie Holmes‘s Khaite cashmere cardigan and bra set went viral for a reason in 2019. It looked so cool bringing on shoulders and a lot of décolletage.

Pringle of Scotland x H&M

Your knitwear is about to get a revamp for a great budget with H&M‘s newest collaboration with Pringle of Scotland. The collection makes clever use of recycled polyester and organic cotton along with cosy alpaca wool and smooth viscose fibres — and is showcased by stylist and fashion editor Julia Sarr-Jamois.

When the design team at H&M was first presented with the idea of a knitwear collaboration, their minds fell immediately on Pringle of Scotland. With the brand’s signature argyle patterns and sporty knitwear pairings on the golf course, Pringle – founded in 1815 – is renowned as one of the oldest luxury knitwear brands in the world.

«We fell completely in love with the brand’s history, from their intimate and modest origins from Hawick, Scotland, to their technical innovation in knitwear», says Holli Parkinson, knitwear designer at H&M.

When the H&M team met with Pringle in their design office in London’s Vincent Square, presenting their initial trend idea to them, they went through the archives and one pattern stood out from the rest: the iconic argyle that has been part of the Pringle of Scotland’s DNA since the 1920s.

«Together with our in-house print team, we reworked different scales and colourways of the argyle. Inspired by streetwear styling and sport influences, we developed new designs around the classic pattern, and introduced an acid yellow colour as a highlight accent which brought the whole collection together», says Holli Parkinson.

The key pieces of the collection include a sweater which boasts a patchwork of tone and texture, splicing a retro-inspired diamond pattern with heavy ribbed wool, and a cropped, funnel-necked jumper with balloon sleeves. Traditional yarns are infused with attitudinal appeal in a series of generously oversized, raw-edged sweaters. Sweater dresses with ring-pull zip closures, cosy hoodies, second-skin leggings and slouchy hats and scarves are all printed with athletic logos for an athleisure take.

The in-house design team at H&M had constant contact with Pringle of Scotland throughout the process, and were able to share thoughts and ideas from sketches to samples.

«Pringle of Scotland has a long history of collaboration, and this latest partnership with H&M has been hugely inspiring. We are always looking for new ways to express the DNA of our heritage knitwear and we hope this latest playful, sporty take on our famous argyle and Fair Isle knitwear will delight our existing customers, as well as reach a worldwide audience via H&M», says Katy Wallace, Brand Director at Pringle of Scotland.

The Alanui Hype

«Like a blanket that always stays with you – it has sentimental values.» – Nicolò Oddi

Sometimes, it is fascinating how a fashion item can rise to fame in a short amount of time, mostly thanks to Instagram. One piece that has been spotted all over is an oversized cuddly cardigan handcrafted from 980 grams of Cariaggi cashmere. Created by Nicolò Oddi in dialogue with his sister and muse Carlotta in the beginning of 2016, luxury Italian label ALANUI is defined by its colorful jacquard knitwear that pays homage to Native-American iconography, focusing on this one style only.  The production of one ethnic-style cardigan can take up to 11 hours.

Carlotta Oddi herself steers a large part of that success – after all, she’s probably the label’s best testimonial. She’s admired by many for her individualistic look, which can also be seen in her 97,700 Instagram followers. It all started a few years ago when Carlotta flew to Hawaii with a large vintage cardigan in her suitcase, a gift from her brother Nicolò, a piece that became her travel companion and that inspired both siblings to create their own line.

This season the siblings have added for the first time sweaters with fringe, cardigans with hoods, ponchos, and small accessories like cashmere hats. Moreover they launched their first collaboration with the concept store Colette. Today, the must-have knitwear has spread like wildfire, selling worldwide across Asia, Europe, the Middle East, Canada, and the USA. A statement of pure luxury that has inspired other designers to copy it.

ETRO seeked inspiration from ALANUI this season. I have to admit that I like those cardigans a lot and great news is that they are much cheaper. Who would have thought this?

By the way ALANUI means «large path» in the Hawaiian language. This might be a good omen, and it will carry them a long way further.

Crush of the Week: Alanui x Colette

ALANUIicon, which means «large path» in Hawaiian language, is the result of accurate research and a dialogue between the siblings Nicolò and Carlotta Oddi, about journey, one of the fueling principles of the brand. A single item, an oversized cashmere jacquard cardigan, produced in a variety of patterns and colors, an adaptable piece with no immediate gender connotation and no season. Each ALANUIicon item is meant to be the perfect travel companion and handcrafted from 980 grams of Cariaggi cashmere, it can take up to 11 hours to make.

ALANUI’s Nicolò e Carlotta Oddi

Now, ALANUIicon has joined forced with COLETTE for a special collection which marks also the brand’s first ever collaboration. A tribute to the well-known store in Paris, this is the perfect occasion to celebrate the twenty years anniversary of the Parisian concept store and its iconic «blue colette». Comprised of three iconic ALANUIicon oversize cardigans, those must-have pieces are inspired by the native-American iconography and culture, and the Bandana, enriched by hand made embroideries resembling the maxi paisley typical of the foulard made in USA.

Exclusively for COLETTE, ALANUIicon launches also «ALANUI Kids», the first kidswear collection of the brand. The three cardigans for children, proposed in two different sizes, present same patterns and material of the adult styles. A special packaging is exclusively designed for the collaboration. Each cardigan presents a hand-woven label and it is sold in a box with colors paying homage to the store’s identity.

The capsule ALANUI x COLETTE will be sold at COLETTE from today till the 30th of October and on the online store starting now for one month.
